Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a common disorder that affects women of reproductive age. It’s characterised by the presence of multiple small cysts on the ovaries, and can cause a wide range of symptoms, including infertility, hirsutism (excessive hair growth), acne and weight gain.
As part of a holistic treatment and wellness plan, acupuncture may be able to assist some women in managing the symptoms of PCOS.
Living with PCOS
PCOS causes imbalances in hormones, which results in the symptoms mentioned above. While the exact cause of PCOS is unknown, it’s thought to be linked to insulin resistance and a high level of androgens (male hormones) in the body.
How acupuncture can help manage the symptoms of PCOS
There are a number of acupuncture points that are used to address the symptoms of PCOS. The most commonly used acupuncture points are:
- Spleen 6: This point is located on the inside of the leg, two finger widths above the ankle bone. It is used to target the menstrual cycle and assist with fertility issues.
- Zigong: It is used to address insulin resistance and hormone levels.
- Liver 14: This point is located on the inside of the arm, two finger widths below the armpit. It primarily targets fertility.
- Stomach 36: This point is located on the outside of the leg, four finger widths below the kneecap. It is used to help promote weight loss and assist in reduction of acne.
