Background and Introduction to Auriculotherapy
Dr. Paul Nogier first established auriculotherapy in 1956 after years of research, mapping out over 130 points on the ear and identifying a somatotopic representation of the human body in the auricle. He attributed the therapeutic effects to a reflexive action between specific ear points and corresponding areas of the body.
Over time, three main systems of auricular nomenclature emerged: Chinese, French (Nogier’s), and American. In 1990, the World Health Organization (WHO) formally recognized auriculotherapy and established a standardized international nomenclature. In 2000, Dr. Alimi demonstrated the existence of auricular points using functional MRI, proving that needling specific points, such as the pineal gland point on the ear, would activate corresponding regions in the brain. This pivotal research helped WHO formally adopt Dr. Alimi’s system.
Auriculotherapy Seminar with Dr. Alimi
This year, Houng attended a seminar led by Dr. Alimi in Montreal, where he has conducted over 30 years of scientific research. The five-day intensive course covered auriculotherapy strategies for managing various health conditions, emphasizing an evidence-based approach.

Integrating Auriculotherapy in Practice Having utilized acupuncture successfully, auriculotherapy adds a scientifically validated modality to further support patient outcomes. Its diverse applications allow for non-invasive treatment options, especially beneficial for children and patients seeking complementary care in areas like mental health, women’s health, and pain management.
This training with Dr. Alimi has enhanced our capacity to offer evidence-based auriculotherapy as an adjunct to acupuncture, helping us better serve our patients across a wide range of conditions.
